ABOUT WYMAN

MISSION & VISION

Wyman’s mission is to enable teens from disadvantaged circumstances to lead successful lives and build strong communities. Our vision is to foster communities where every teen is expected and supported to thrive in life, work and learning so that they may become economically self-sufficient, leaders in their communities and, ultimately, break the cycle of poverty.

WE ARE EXPERTS IN DEVELOPING TEENS

Wyman takes the best teen development theory and makes it real and effective in a way that builds fully prepared teens. Wyman consistently provides a time-tested approach with four key components. Wyman creates interactive peer group experiences; delivers curriculum that is engaging, relevant and challenging; provides community service learning; and makes sure there is strong support from adults as positive role models.

WE ARE 110 YEARS OLD AND COUNTING

Founded in 1898 by a group of prominent St. Louis citizens, Wyman’s original purpose was to provide children living in sweltering tenements with fresh air, good food and healthy outdoor activities. In the year 2000, Wyman narrowed its focus to the particular, and increasingly complex, needs of today's teens by developing and administering long-term, outcome-based programs to help teens find meaning and purpose, develop healthy lifestyles, and then share their success with their communities. Throughout our history, we have served more than 600,000 St. Louis area children and youth through a variety of youth development programming.

NATIONAL RECOGNITION

Wyman is nationally renowned for getting real results for the young people served, currently reaching out to teens in 28 states. Wyman has earned the recognition of the Brookings Institution, The Harvard Family Research Project, National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy and more. Wyman Teen Leadership Program

The Wyman Teen Leadership Program (TLP) engages teens from economically disadvantaged circumstances year-round for five years beginning in eighth grade. The program is guided by a progressive leadership theme, and teens gain the experiences, skills and values needed to prepare to act as contributing students, family members, employees and citizens. Wyman TLP teens are beating the odds! 100% of young people who complete Wyman TLP, graduate high school on time and 90% immediately go on to college or trade school.

Program Goals

The goals of the Teen Leadership Program are to help youth be productive in school and work; to connect to community and family; and to be able to navigate successfully in diverse environments. Specific program objectives include:

  • Form and maintain positive relationships with other youth and adults;

  • Make a positive contribution to community;

  • Respect human diversity and be capable of working and living in a diverse community;

  • Graduate from high school and pursue higher education or employment;

  • Develop leadership skills in the areas of self-awareness, community, group effectiveness, organization, decision-making, and problem-solving.

Community Partners

The Wyman Teen Leadership Program invites specific school districts and agencies with which we have established a partnership to nominate high-performing, high-potential 7th graders. Partners are invited to nominate a total of about 275 youth in the metropolitan area each year.
